How to be a sensitive person, in an insensitive world?

This was one of the very first questions and challenges I put to myself when I began my healing journey. And these days, it feels more relevant than ever.

Unlike years past though, my skills and confidence have grown. What once felt like massive frustration, struggle, and shame now comes with more ease and clarity.

I guess I write this as a nod to all the fellow sensitive souls out there who are still trying to find their way. I write to remind you that you are not alone, and maybe, in some small way, to lend a hand.

As a guy, it was an especially tricky path to navigate.

Let’s be honest: There is still a certain perception of what masculinity is supposed to look like. The good news is that many of those ideas are being properly challenged.

I think it’s clearer now than ever that the biggest, strongest, and loudest are not necessarily the most masculine. Masculinity looks different on different men, even though there are certain qualities many of us share.

It takes tremendous courage to own being a sensitive person these days. And I’m not talking about crying at the drop of a hat, or allowing ourselves to be pushed around. That’s not what I mean.

Being highly sensitive comes with real advantages. For me, it allows me to feel deeply and access a kind of intuition that serves me in many areas of life, especially in my work.

It also comes with challenges. It can tip into anxiety, overwhelm, or feeling too much, without knowing how to process it all.

Regardless of whether we are men or women, there is a unique balance we have to cultivate between our masculine and feminine energy.

How do we stay connected to our hearts, communicate from that place, and then in the very next moment, close it up and set a firm boundary?

That’s the practice.

It STARTS with acknowledging the sensitive aspect of ourselves. It CONTINUES by learning to embrace that side of us, instead of hiding it, fighting it, or trying to distance ourselves from it.
