Pivot!
John Lennon once said, “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.” The Yiddish proverb expresses a similar idea: “Man plans and God laughs”
I’ve always been a big believer in having a vision for my life and career. But just as important as having a clear vision is the ability to stay flexible — to pivot when life reveals a new direction.
Take my own journey as an example. For most of my life, I was certain I wanted marriage and kids. Then, during my mid-30s to mid-40s, my focus shifted, and I began considering becoming an older father.
Then Lindsay came into my life, and together, we explored another path. After much reflection, we decided not to have children. Instead, we committed ourselves to a shared mission: helping others improve their health and lives, learning how to care for one another, and traveling the world together.
The ability to recognize when a pivot is needed — in your career, finances, health & body, relationships, craft, or location — is key to personal growth and long-term success. But recognizing those transformative moments isn’t enough. The real challenge is having the courage to act when those moments arise.
Without action, even the most profound realizations become meaningless.
